The best times to
view the flowers are from mid-July to October,
with orchids and some wattle species flowering as early as April. The
Merredin Visitor's Centre has a special interest in wild flower
sightings with reported sightings being updated on an almost daily basis.
The woodlands of the
Wheatbelt have a greater diversity of plant species than the world renown
karri forests of the Southwest. Nungarin has been featured on several
international wildflower tours conducted by the Wildflower Society of WA.
Habitats in the Wheatbelt range from open woodland, granite outcrops, sand
plain country to extensive salt lake systems. This gives rise to a great
variety of flora and fauna species; many now only confined to nature
reserves and roadside verges in these habitats.
Nungarin Shire shares
with adjacent Shires in the 980 species that have been recorded. Species of
acacia and eucalypt make up the majority but also included are some 47 species of orchids and numerous species of hakea, grevillea,
verticordia and other varieties of heath land plants.
