Nungarin Attractions

Wheatbelt Markets

Be a stall holder or just watch the world go by.

        The stalls line the main street in Nungarin, with most of the main street businesses opening for the markets.

Nungarin Wheatbelt Markets has something for everyone.

Eaglestone Rock

Eaglestone Rock is 21km drive  NE from the Township of Nungarin.

Eaglestone Rock is a spectacular natural granite rock with fantastic cave formations. The scenery is simply breathtaking with panoramic views of the Wheatbelt. The sparkling white crystal salt flats of Lake Brown come right up to the eastern side of the rock. Photographers bring your cameras and you certainly won't be disappointed.

Nungarin Heritage Machinery and Army Museum

The Heritage Machinery and Army Museum is in the  Township of Nungarin.

Come and  experience a lifetime at the Museum.

Items on display span our Pioneer and Army History. The exhibits are housed in the ex-Army building pictured above. This building in itself is an attraction, as it is a huge 2500m2 and is totally constructed of timber, making it one of the largest timber buildings in the Southern Hemisphere. The Museum is located in the original surrounds of 5 Base Ordnance Depot; a cornerstone in the defence of Australia during World War II.

The Museum's extensive collections include:

      Army vehicles, uniforms and equipment;
      Agricultural machinery from years gone by;
      Period memorabilia;
      Doll collection;
      Matchbox car and truck collections.
      Original records

After the outbreak of World War II, there arose a strategic need for an Army Depot and Workshop, situated away from the coastal area, but accessible by road and rail from Perth, to support the Army Defence Force if an invasion by the Japanese were to take place.

Nungarin was chosen because:

It was outside Aircraft Carrier fuel range;

It was serviced by rail from 2 directions - the Goomalling/Wyalkatchem loop line and the Narrogin/Bruce Rock line, and in addition it had easy access to the Perth to Kalgoorlie main railway line at Merredin, which is only 42 km to the South.

Nungarin's position in the central wheatbelt straddles the major population centres to the North and South of the state

 The site has two separate water supplies based on rock catchments, giving independence from Scheme Water Supply in an emergency.

Marvel at the old army vehicles including tanks, trucks, antique farm equipment including old tractors and tools.  Many artifacts, historical photographs, original army clothing and records also on display
